ABA Test-Prep Market Booms as BCBA Pass Rates Slide

The 2025 BCBA exam posted a 51% first-time pass rate, the lowest the Behavior Analyst Certification Board has ever recorded. The same year, U.S. employers posted 132,307 jobs requiring the credential against a working pool of roughly 81,566 active BCBAs. Test-prep vendors now sit at the center of a workforce gap that no other channel can close on its own.

A Coin-Flip Exam and a 50,000-Seat Gap

ACROSS THE UNITED STATES – First-time pass rates on the BCBA exam fell to 51% in 2025, the lowest the Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB) has ever recorded. Retakes passed at 23%.

First-time candidate volume reached 9,955 in 2025, up 51% from 2020. The BACB administered 23,151 BCBA sittings across the year, a record. Over the same period, about 132,300 U.S. job postings requiring the credential, up 28% year over year, against roughly 81,566 BCBAs holding active certifications at year end. The shortfall sits near 50,000 unfilled positions, and more than half of U.S. counties have no practicing BCBA at all.

The decline is not a one-year break. First-time pass rates peaked at 66% in 2020 and slid every year since. Industry sources told Behavioral Health Business in March 2026 that the new content explains most of the year-over-year drop, while the longer-run slide tracks how candidates are being prepared. The 6th Edition Test Content Outline took effect January 1, 2025, restructuring the Ethics domain into 12 specific tasks, integrating diversity, equity, and inclusion across six tasks in three domains, and lifting the total task count to 104.

Pass-rate variance across the roughly 192 university programs in the 2024 BACB report ran the entire gamut. Roughly 10 large programs produce half of all first-time BCBA candidates, and several of those large programs sit near the bottom of the pass-rate distribution. The RBT (registered behavior technician) credential is on a milder version of the same curve. The RBT first-time pass rate fell to around 75% in 2023, down from 84% in 2020.

Roughly 10 university programs produce half of all first-time BCBA candidates. Several of those programs post pass rates that would close a medical school.

The combination – record demand, record volume, record failure, has made test preparation an unusually active commercial category. The BACB does not endorse third-party prep products, leaving every claim about pass rates, content match, and money-back guarantees to be made by the vendors themselves.

The Vendor Stack

The BCBA test-prep market is fragmented and difficult to size from outside. The visible players cluster into three tiers.

Legacy publishers. Behavior Development Solutions (BDS), founded in 1998, runs the CBA Learning Module Series, the most widely cited prep stack in the market. BDS reports that around half of all BCBA candidates use the modules, claims a 98.5% pass rate for first-time takers who complete the program, and offers a money-back guarantee contingent on completing 100% of the modules at 100% correct and submitting an exam result within 14 days. More than 100 university programs use BDS as a curriculum supplement, and the company reports partnerships with more than 150 universities and organizations.

Software incumbents. CentralReach launched ABA Knowledge Builder in 2022 as a prep product integrated with its practice-management EHR. The Association for Advanced Training in the Behavioral Sciences (AATBS), a multi-credential prep house in business since 1976, sells a BCBA package built around 1,200-plus practice questions, live online coaching, and a “Prep Until You Pass” guarantee.

Founder-led shops. Pass The Big ABA Exam, established in 2012, sells study manuals and workshop courses. StudyABA, Study Notes ABA, Path 4 ABA, Behavior Analyst Supervisor, and ABA Study Guide each sell modular courses, bootcamps, and mock exams in the $50 to $400 range. StudyABA reports that customers raise scores by an average of 12% on its Mastery Modules and claims a money-back guarantee gated on completing both mock exams at 76% or better.

The RBT prep tier sits on a different economic curve. The 40-hour training is required for entry, and the field has commoditized. ATCC sells a 40-hour bundle at $39, Behavior University and Florida Tech sit in the $79 to $149 range, and several large providers offer training free as part of onboarding. Behavior Frontiers, which runs its own internal pipeline, reported top-decile pass rates among 40-hour providers in the BACB’s 2023 program-level data. The median provider-level RBT first-time pass rate was 80.4% across 31 reported programs.

Where the Money Actually Flows

Three buyer pools fund the legitimate prep market, with a fourth channel operating outside it.

Individual candidates. A first BCBA attempt costs $370 through the BACB and Pearson VUE: a $245 application fee and a $125 exam fee. Each retake costs $265. Candidates are permitted up to eight attempts in a rolling two-year window. Prep packages range from $50 at the entry tier to roughly $400 for live online courses, with high-end bootcamps and one-on-one tutoring above that.

Employers. Large multi-state providers have moved into employer-funded prep at scale. Hopebridge runs formal university partnerships with Capella University, Bellevue University, and Purdue Global, combining tuition discounts with paid practicum hours and BCBA prep support. Bellevue alone offers up to $5,250 in tuition assistance for Hopebridge employees and $3,500 for immediate family members. ABS Kids reports that roughly 150 employees are currently in a full-tuition program with National University that includes free supervision hours and certification test-prep materials.

Universities. BDS in 100-plus university programs is the most concrete case of prep entering institutional curricula. Where pass rates are low and program enrollment is large, the prep platform increasingly substitutes for what a graduate course was meant to deliver. The BACB publishes pass rates by program in its annual update, which gives prospective students more visibility into program performance than most graduate disciplines offer.

A fourth channel sits outside the legitimate market. The BACB’s ethics rules allow the board to revoke certification from any candidate found to have used an “exam dump,” an unauthorized site that resells actual exam questions. The board values each compromised exam form at $250,000 in replacement costs plus legal fees and reserves the right to refer cases to law enforcement. Dump-style domains, including operators marketed under names like Marks4sure and Certification-Questions, still appear on the first page of Google results for “BCBA exam prep,” competing in the same search results as BDS, AATBS, and CentralReach.

BACB enforcement against exam-dump use is not publicly itemized. The board’s Certificant Registry lists active sanctions; invalidations and revocations remain published for the maximum period permitted by law. The board has not released a year-over-year count of dump-related disciplinary actions.

The BACB values each compromised exam form at $250,000. Dump sites appear in the same Google results as the publication-of-record vendors.

What to Watch

The 2025 cohort’s retake outcomes will reach the BACB’s 2026 annual report in mid-year. If retake pass rates hold below 25%, more candidates will exhaust the eight-attempt window and re-enter the application process, which pulls additional volume back through the prep funnel at the front end. The BACB publishes its next 6th Edition implementation review in the third quarter.

The 2025 program-level pass rates will be published in the BACB’s December update. Programs that posted sub-40% rates in 2024 face a second annual data point that could shape student demand and accreditation review in 2026.
