What ABC Announced
AUSTIN, TEXAS – Action Behavior Centers, one of the largest center-based providers of applied behavior analysis in the country, said on June 2 that it is rolling out a single design standard across its more than 400 ABA centers, an effort to make the spaces where therapy happens look and run the same way from one clinic to the next.
The company calls the program the 2026 ABC Design Standard and frames it as a clinically informed redesign. In practice it is a facilities playbook. ABC built it around four pillars: wall and floor protection, sensory play upgrades, storage and organization, and more reliable HVAC and plumbing. The standard grew out of field tours and interviews with staff, the company said, who flagged gaps in safety, consistency, organization, and hygiene across locations.
ABC ties the upgrades to clinical quality, arguing that the way a center looks, feels, and sounds shapes how autistic children learn and engage.
The Operator Behind the Standard
The more telling context is corporate. Action Behavior Centers was founded in 2016 and is based in Austin. When the private equity firm NexPhase Capital first invested in 2018, ABC ran five clinics, all in Texas. By 2026 the company says it operates more than 400 nationwide, having expanded from its Texas base into Colorado, Illinois, North Carolina, and Arizona.
Boston-based Charlesbank Capital Partners bought ABC in August 2022 in a deal that valued the company at about $840 million, against roughly $60 million in projected annual adjusted earnings, according to Becker’s Behavioral Health and the deal reporting it cited. The buildout has not slowed. Public filings with the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation show ABC registering center renovation and expansion projects through 2025, separate from the design-standard announcement.

Why a Design Standard, Now
A uniform design standard across 400-plus sites fits a familiar pattern for private-equity-backed multisite operators. Standardizing the physical plant, alongside intake, billing, and documentation, makes a large network easier to manage, brand, and eventually sell. For an operator that scaled this quickly through buildout and acquisition, consistency from clinic to clinic is an operational and marketing asset as much as a clinical one.
Charlesbank has owned ABC since 2022, a holding period now in its fourth year, the stage at which sponsors often begin weighing an exit. A network of 400-plus centers built to one specification is a cleaner asset to package than a patchwork of inherited leases. ABC said the standard will reach all of its centers. It did not give a completion date.
