Don’t Worry, The Pitbulls are Harmless

I work in a rural area. Which is fine… I like rural and grew up in a farm town. I like quiet roads and long driveways and GPS saying “you have arrived” while I’m clearly in the middle of a field. But I need to talk about one client.. I pull up at 9:58am for my 10:00 session. It’s silent. Curtains closed. No movement. I knock. Nothing. I text. Nothing. I wait in my car like a confused DoorDash driver.
At 10:07 the door creaks open and a kid whispers, “They’re still asleep.” But my session started 7 minutes ago! Eventually Dad shuffles out in pajama pants and waves me in like this is totally standard procedure. And immediately four pit bulls explode into the room. I’m holding my materials box like it’s a shield. Dad says, “Oh don’t worry, they’re harmless.” One of them just knocked over a chair and is sniffing my toys like they are looking for drugs at the airport. I try to start pairing while simultaneously calculating escape routes. Then halfway through the session, two of the dogs start growling at me! Dad from the kitchen: “They just do that sometimes.”
WHAT?! Help!! And then there’s the cousin who is frequently shirtless. Just… existing. On the couch. Passed out. Cigarette between his fingers from the night before! But it’s hard to maintain clinical focus when there are 400 pounds of unleashed muscle sprinting through the house and a smoldering cigarette five feet from my client. And when I mentioned safety concerns once, I got, “You’ve gotta be comfortable around dogs if you’re gonna work down here.” I’m comfortable around dogs and folks who have different lifestyle, but help! What should I do??
